The Dammeron Valley Fire Special Service District issues this statement of opposition to the Red Butte Solar Project currently under consideration by the Bureau of Land Management. The public land the developer is asking to utilize for this project is located East of Dammeron Valley in an area designated as a Solar Exclusion zone (deemed inappropriate for solar development).
Solar farms increase the risk of high-temperature and hazardous material fires that can quickly spread to surrounding areas. While Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue (DVFR) routinely trains for structure, wildland, and hazardous material fire events, a solar farm that may encompass as much as 11 square miles poses a significant increase in risk to area residents and first responders. Secondary to fire, the project raises other concerns about damage to the watershed that could lead to flooding.
