Position Description: Works under direct supervision of the Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue (DVFR) Deputy Chief for Operations and/or Division/Group Supervisor/Strike Team Leader when deployed. This position will assist in all aspects of the DVFR Wildland Fire Program management, staffing, training, deployments, vehicle/apparatus sustainment, wildfire suppression, and prescribed fire operations. This position will perform tasks to control and extinguish wildfires as needed when deployed on a DVFR apparatus from 1 May through 31 October annually. This position will oversee implementation of annual certification training, Red Card training and submission of all certification paperwork. In addition, this position shall oversee/train wildland firefighters in the performance of a variety of projects such as tree removal, hazard fuel reduction, and administer firefighter training for advancement in NWCG defined positions.


Responsibilities Summary: Supervises the DVFR Wildland Fire Program and serves as a deployable Engine Boss (ENGB) committed to DVFR on a Wildland Fire Suppression Engine Crew. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversees and maintains appropriate records, including fire reports.

  • Directly responsible for the safety of deployed engine crew personnel.

  • Oversees the collection and evaluation of weather, fuels, topography, and fire behavior data for wildland fires.

  • Coordinates operation of portable pumps, chain saws, and other fire equipment.

  • Coordinates performance of tasks to control and extinguish wildfires, as needed.

  • Assigns responsibility for vehicle logs, maintenance/upkeep of all vehicles, equipment, or other fire related gear.

  • Completes various paperwork for reimbursement of deployed hours and other forms as required for successful deployment, demobilization, and payment from wildfire assignments.

  • Assigned other duties as required to meet the needs of the DVFR organization and Wildland Fire Program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Exceptional history of stellar leadership and recent experience working with fire service personnel

  • NWCG Certified Engine Boss with at least two-years current deployment experience

  • NWCG Faller II Certification

  • 2021 Red Card Holder (Passed Work Capacity Test)

  • Previous deployment experience for Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 incidents

  • Deployable from 1 May to 31 October, annually

  • Competed NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800

  • Physical Fitness Requirement: Ability to lift 60lbs overhead; carry up to 45lbs in addition to Line Pack for long distances; ability to be on your feet for long duration periods of 8-12 hours

Desired Qualifications:

  • Structure Firefighter 1 Certification; Emergency Medical Technician-Basic; NIMS 300 and 400
